Purpose: The Norwich YMCA Dolphins Swim Team is a competitive swim team focusing on improving times during races of various distances in one or more of the competitive swimming strokes of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Competitions between other teams are frequent.

Eligible Ages: Open to all elementary, middle, and high school youth 7-18 years of age.

Beginning Skill Level Required: new swimmers should be able to swim at least one full lap of the pool using either front crawl stroke (freestyle) or backstroke or breaststroke. Swimmers that have advanced out of swim lessons or those comfortable swimming in the deep end are encouraged to join.

Skills Developed: competitive swimming techniques in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly along with competition style starts and turns are developed in practice throughout the season.

Length of Season: Swim season starts in October and can run until February for District Championships and/or mid-March for those swimmers whom qualify for the State Championship meet.

Travel: Away meets require trips throughout central NY including Auburn, Cortland, Watertown, and Oneonta. State competitions are held throughout NY state in different places each year such as Buffalo or Long Island. Swimmers are responsible for transportation to the meets.

Time Commitment: practices are held in the afternoon after school typically 5 days a week for all age groups. Meets can last between 2-4 hours plus travel.
